COURSE DESCRIPTION
COURSE OVERVIEW

Intravascular catheters are indispensable to modern-day medical care, particularly for management of critically ill patients. Although indwelling catheters afford many benefits, they are known to be associated with an increased risk of complications such as local site infection, catheter-related blood stream infection, septic thrombophlebitis, endocarditis, and other metastatic infections (e.g. lung abscess, brain abscess, osteomyelitis, and endophthalmitis).

This course is designed to provide hospital staff with the knowledge necessary to reduce the risk of complications that may result from the insertion and maintenance of central venous catheters.

This course will address:

  • professional qualifications and responsibilities of those clinicians that insert catheters; supervise catheter insertions; and monitor patients during catheter insertion.
  • methods for selecting an insertion site, proper positioning of the patient and monitoring vital parameters during catheter placement.
  • pre-procedure preparation of the patient’s skin and aseptic technique applicable to insertion of a CVC.
  • considerations in the ongoing maintenance of the CVC.
  • administrative steps and required documentation regarding CVC placement.

This course pertains to all credentialed staff who insert central venous catheters in adult and pediatric patients (excluding neonates) in all New York Presbyterian Hospital campus settings. Questions pertaining to the content of this course may be referred to:
